The American Robin
The American Robin (Turdus migratorius) is a migratory songbird belonging to the family Turdidae, found throughout North America. These birds are known for their bright orange-red breast and their melodious song. My lake house in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania has been home to many American Robins. They are the first migrating birds to return in the spring.
Physical Characteristics:
The American Robin is a medium-sized bird, measuring about 9 to 11 inches in length and weighing around 2.7 to 3 ounces. They have a brownish-gray back, black head, and bright orange-red breast. They have a long, thin beak which they use to catch insects and worms.
Habitat:
The American Robin can be found in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, forests, suburban areas, and parks. They prefer areas with open fields, where they can easily find food.
Diet:
The American Robin primarily feeds on insects, such as beetles, grasshoppers, and earthworms. They also eat fruits and berries, especially during the winter months when insects are scarce.
