A poem that remembers

Photo by Jingxi Lau on Unsplash

On January 6 three years ago
Thousands gathered to overthrow
What has taken our brave many centuries
To nurture and blend through many catastrophes
In the beginning our founding fathers would not lay down
To the high price and rule of the English crown
They stayed as strong as any folks could stand
To live in this democratic and free promised land
We can’t let those who trespassed that day
Get away with it and just walk away
We all must fight for justice and right
To rid our country of those who would start a fight
For something they chose to now believe
Because some someone said, “Roll up your sleeves!”
And fight to take what just those few believe
While the greater who voted said, “Not when we choose!”
Go home you fools and live by the rules
So on this day and every January 6th
We are reminded of a crowd with guns and sticks
That mobbed our house in Washington, DC
To change the rules of our democracy.
