Why we celebrate the day

Photo by Dean Bennett on Unsplash

We mark this day with sweat and callused hands
For equal rights to change monopolies
The endless strife in every distant land
Less hours and more wages just and free

From ancient Rome where slaves endured their lot
To modern times when unions fought for all
The struggle for a just and fairer spot
Echoed through the ages hear their call

Today we honor those who paved the way
Whose sacrifice has brought us where we stand
A day of rest a chance to celebrate and play
A tribute to the working man and woman’s hand

For in their labor we all rise and fall
Through their efforts we now stand tall.
