A short story of the voice inside us

As we grow through life, especially from teens to adults, we begin to realize what life is all about. We desire a comfortable existence filled with love and a profession or job that makes us happy to go to work and of course, gives us the financial stability to have the comforts of life. Why not?

As we make these strides forward, we realize there is a voice inside our head that constantly reminds us of who we are and what we should be doing. That inner voice has been given more names I care to list. It starts off as if a friend then turns into our enemy. It is relentless, always knowing just the right thing to say at any given point. It takes years of practice to adjust to the constant badgering. Eventually, we run to seek outside help to calm this inside noise that just won’t give up. It is our voice without a face.

To its credit, it knows it can live forever. Without any skin or bones, it can’t decay over time. I’ve often thought when my body ceases to exist from age or disease, it will find another body to haunt until that life finally expires. Of course, I will never know for sure, although some of the things it comes up with must have been from another life. It must be, because I’ve never come close to some of the crazy suggestions it brings up. And it brings them up at the most inconvenient times.
