Walking In The Dark

A story of fear

Photo by Breno Assis on Unsplash

In the darkness of the winter nights
The sun is still an hour from rising
Walking from home to your bus for work
You know the chance you are taking
In the cold darkness just before dawn
The streetlamps create shadows
The wind has its own way of swaying leaves
suggesting there is someone there
Even if there are no leaves
The quiet alone creates sounds that give you a chill
Noises you wouldn’t hear in daylight
Your fears are of what isn’t there
Yet you know that something or someone could be there
Afraid you still walk on
The fear becomes a stimulant
A feeling you enjoy yet still are afraid of
Your skin crawls
Yet you still go on
Why did you put yourself in this scary place
You knew the chances you were taking
Still here you are
So dreadfully scared of what lies ahead
Carefully you move forward hoping
You will get to where there are lights
Step by step you can see light above the bus stop ahead
And once again you feel safe.
